Course description
Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to teach students (non-native speakers) how to communicate in everyday life situations in the Czech language and to equip them with the language competence to match CEF level A2/B1.
|
Requirements on student
|
Credit requirements:
1. Attendance is compulsory.
2. Students have to take a midterm test.
3. Students have to pass a final test (min. 75 %).
4. Students have to submit a written seminar work (min. 200 words).
5. Students have to give a short report (5-10 min) on a selected topic.
Exam requirements:
The exam is oral and consists of two parts - a monologue on selected topic and a dialogue with the teacher on a given communicative situation. The final result is based on the assessment of both parts. The topics are based on the content of the seminars.

Academic etiquette - academic titles, vocative, politeness conditional.
Week 2
Conditional - conditional clauses, advice and recommendations.
Week 3
Topic of conversation: Weather.
Adjectives and adverbs.
Week 4
Adjectives - comparative and superlative.
Formation of adverbs.
Week 5
Conversation topic: Technology and communication.
Writing a formal and informal e-mail.
Week 6
Dative singular.
Invitation.
Week 7
Topic of conversation: Fashion and clothes.
Object phrases in the dative case.
Midterm test.
Week 8
Personal pronouns - declension and practice.
Syntax - the second position rule.
Week 9
Topic of conversation: Services
Instrumental singular.
Week 10
Declension of indefinite and negative pronouns.
Conversation topic: Human relations
Week 11
Time expressions.
Verbal connections with locative.
Week 12
Revision for the final test, course summary.
Final test.
Week 13
Correction of the final test. Exam preparation.

Prerequisites

Knowledge - students are expected to possess the following knowledge before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
Students can: - take part in a dialogue about everyday life topics - find the main and most important ideas in authentic texts - understand the basic information in texts of their field of study (both heard and read) and express their views on such information - write texts of simple structure on general topics

Skills - students are expected to possess the following skills before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
- use nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals in all cases in singular and plural
- use the verb forms of the present, past and future tense
- summarize or analyse information obtained by listening to an easy text related to everyday life activities, such as meeting new people, housing, weather, shopping, dining, services, health, leisure activities
- search for relevant information in a short text focused on everyday life activities |

|
Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students can: - adequately use common grammar structures in everyday life situations - start a small talk in an adequate way - use with a good degree of certainty vocabulary and phrases enabling them to communicate without problems in situations which require a direct exchange of information - use basic terminology of their field of study - express their opinions and attitudes, belief and uncertainty - write short texts of simple structure used in everyday life (a message, e-mail, response to an advertisement, a request etc.) - find and select important information in authentic texts which deal with general topics and do not have a complicated structure

- can use grammatical and lexical means on the B1.1 level with an emphasis on the content of the course
- can choose the appropriate linguistic means with regard to communicative situation
- can deliver a short report related to the content of the course
